In December 2004 the Swedish National Action Network was reorganised. An association with member organisations including rheumatologists, orthopeadics, nurses, physiotherapists and patient organisations has been formed.
Various health professionals working with musculoskeletal disorders and trauma as well as patient organizations are involved in the National Action Network in Sweden, headed by Mrs Inga-Britt Lindström, president of The Swedish Association of Occupational Therapists. The steering committee of the NAN meet several times a year. The Swedish government endorsed the Bone and Joint Decade in September 1999 in a written statement by Minister of Health and Social Welfare Lars Engqvist. A questionnaire regarding education for medical students in musculoskeletal disorders and trauma has in July 2002 been sent out to all departments at the university hospitals in Sweden involved in such teaching programs. The aim of the questionnaire was to define the extent and contents of education in musculoskeletal disorders and trauma. An evaluation of the educational programs for physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nurses regarding presence of knowledge on musculoskeletal disorders has been initiated during 2006. The results will serve as a basis for further discussions regarding the education of health professionals in this field, and the impact of such conditions on patients as well as society. The Swedish Inheritance Fund has granted means for an action project in the fields of information, education and research during the period 2006 to 2009. A web page for Sweden NAN (FRÅ) and the project has been established. A new information leaflet on BJD Sweden has been produced and information given at several occasions such as annual meetings and the international day of osteoporosis. Sweden NAN has grown with new members, such as pharmaceutical companies as AstraZeneca,Wyeth and Roche.
The major part of activities will take place 2007 and onwards. The message to health care personnel and decision-makers will be; that early action, better knowledge and an active patient creates better public health and public finances.
Education seminar on patient participation and the interaction between health care professionals and the patient with multiple needs and a complicated diagnosis has been held in September 2006. The aim of the seminar was to give especially primary health care personnel tools for change in their every day practice to meet the needs of the patient. Basis for further discussions and dialog will be developed for activities 2007.
•Activities concerning the patient’s rights will continue. A specially educated group of members in the patient’s organizations within our NAN will meet in discussions and dialog with primary health care personnel on how to improve the quality in interaction with the patient. •Media actions; articles and other media activities on the value of prevention and early diagnosis and treatment. Target group for the message on prevention is the public, and for early diagnosis and treatment the health care professionals. •Conference on the topic of pain and pain management, 12th of May 2007 •Seminar on early diagnosis and rehabilitation for persons with osteoporosis, autumn 2007.
