Activities 2005–2007eposter2007 eposter2008
The executive committee for the Dutch Network has set new goals for the next three years. The goals are related to the BJD’s international goals.
1. Raise awareness at the public and at politicsTo measure the effects of our activities, we will conduct a survey at the Dutch public. We will ask them about their knowledge of musculoskeletal conditions and the healthcare they feel they require to manage their conditions. We expected a 10 % improvement in the next three years after our activities. To measure the level of knowledge we are planning a survey of the Dutch population.
2. Improvement of CareFor the three key disease areas (Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, and Back/Neck Pain) we aim to improve an aspect or a chain of care for those conditions. In osteoporosis we are planning to implement Fracture Nurses in hospital emergency rooms. This specialised nurse can track down people older then 50 years with a fracture for bone mineral density scan. Identifying the risk population is a chance to treat them and to prevent a next fracture with all its consequences. We will organise expert meetings to identify problems and solutions for osteoarthritis (2006) and back- and neckpain (2007) in 2005.
3. ResearchWe have the intention to enlarge the amount of money allocated to research. Furthermore we aim in another project to establish collaboration between the orthopaedic surgeons and rheumatologists in research. For each goal we will write plans with the activities, planning and budget.
4. EducationWe will make an effort to realise more education for the post-graduated students, but also for specialists. We are aiming to organise this on a regional level. For each year we choose one condition which has our special attention.
- 2005 Osteoporosis
- 2006 Osteoarthritis
- 2007 Back and Neck Pain
Results of the projects 2002–2004As a result of several conferences, an extensive list of priorities has been developed. The Dutch executive committee gave priority to the following projects:
EducationWe distributed a "backbook" among 8000 general physicians and 2000 corporate doctors in the beginning of January. Within a month we had over 750 requests for more! The reactions are very positive!
Factsheet: burden of diseaseThe Dutch BJD aims to describe the Burden of Disease in the Netherlands. Because of a lack of funding for this, we decided to start small by wrote a factsheet about the burden of disease in the Netherlands, and we will work up from there.
Inventory of exercise programs MSCAll information and facts known about exercise programs for MSC are collated and valuated. This will be available for the public on the Internet and in a report for policy-makers. The information and facts about approximately 600 exercise programs for MSC are now known and the internet site will be launched in March 2005.
Health MagazineThe health magazine of the National Consumer Organisation makes, in co-operation with the NAN, a special issue on MSC.
Survey on awarenessA survey among the public is planned about its knowledge of MSC and their consequences. The preparations started in 2004. The survey will be executed in 2005.
NewsletterA professional newsletter for the NAN will be distributed to all Orthopaedics and Rheumatologists in the Netherlands. The newsletter is funded through advertising by the industry.
Day for the PublicA dedicated day (11 December 2004) with numerous activities for people with musculoskeletal conditions in which they can participate. (Unfortunatly the day was postponed owing to problems with inscriptions).
2005For the upcoming years a new plan has been written in 2004 and completed in the beginning of 2005. We described our goals for the next years. These goals are related to improving research, education, care and awareness.
Before 2002
The executive committeeThe executive committee of the NAN- NL consists of 11 members representing professional and patient organisations that are concerned with musculoskeletal disorders. Over 40 organisations have deliver an active contribution through representatives in conferences comments on documents or support in the search for funding. From October 2000 funding is present for professional support by a secretary and two health and movement scientists. The executive committee of the NAN-NL has developed a National Action Plan (NAP-NL). This started with a broad inventory among key persons in the networks of the members of the executive committee. The inventory aimed at collecting opinions about priorities for actions (in prevention and care, social participation of patients, education and knowledge transfer and research). A total of 110 key persons have been approached and 180 priorities for the NAP-NL were mentioned in a short questionnaire. In the beginning of 2001 the executive committee made some important decisions: First of all prevention will be the leading theme for the first cycle of three years. Prevention, in particular secondary en tertiary prevention, reduces the extend of musculoskeletal complaints and will probably lessen the needs for healthcare. Also early diagnose and treatment can prevent chronically or severe damage. This improves the quality of life and brings about a better life with more freedom of movement. These words, FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT, will be the slogan of the Dutch decade. Secondly, the executive committee conciliated a structure for the National Action Network. At the end of 2001 there will be four working committees:
- Public Affairs
- Communication and implementation
- Research
- Epidemiology and monitoring
ConferencesTwo invitational conferences were held in order to discuss priorities and targets for the Bone and Joint Decade with representatives of the supporting organisations. The executive committee of the NAN-NL has met about eighteen times. From October 2000 onwards funding is present for some professional support of the executive committee by a part-time secretary and health or movement scientist. In a number of meetings members of the executive committee gave attention to the Bone and Joint Decade. A number of articles have been published in several Dutch journals (see below).
GovermentThe executive committee has also been in repeated contact with the Ministry of Health. The Dutch Minister of Health has stated, that she supports the importance of health problems resulting from musculoskeletal disorders and that she would like to be informed about further actions of the NAN-NL.
