On October 25, 2002 Siiri Oviir, Minister of Social Affairs of Estonian Republic, signed the Bone and Joint Decade on behalf of the Estonian government.

World Health Day in Estonia

 
 
On 6th of April, 2004 there was a gathering in the centrum of Tallinn to memorize the victims of road accidents. During the years of independent Estonian Republic (1990-2003) 3700 persons died in the road accidents in Estonia. During the last year there was more than 26 000 accidents on roads of Estonia and 1903 people were injured. During last ten years there have been more than 210.000 accidents in traffic. The costs due to traffic accidents related to the 3700 deaths during last 13 years are more than 40 billion Estonian kroons.
 
On the gathering 3700 candles were lit to memorize the victims in accidents on road during last 13 years.

 
 
The speech was given by Maret Maripuu from Tallinn Town Council. The police orchestra gave a concert.
 
The week from 5 April till 11 April was titled safe traffic week and there was held meetings by Traffic Police and Highway Board. The week was started with the briefing in Ministry of Economics and Communications.
 
On 7 April there was a conference in East-Tallinn Central Hospital. It focused on the safety on roads and especially the problems with children and safety on highways. Two physicians Dr.Pille Javed and Dr. Toomas Ernits made the presentations.
 
In conclusion the week was successful and found close interest by public.

The Bone and Joint Decade in Estonia – Events in autumn 2004

September 4th – there was the traditional open air event Walking Day for arthritis patients in Tallinn organized by Estonian Rheumatism Association with participants all over Estonia and from Finland and Latvia. The event was opened by vice minister of Social Affairs. After the 1 or 2 kilometres walk there was a concert and dance.
 
In the beginning of October there have been 2 events dedicated to the bone and joint diseases. Estonian Osteoporosis Society organized a seminar of osteoporosis for family physicians and residents of internal medicine on October 1-2. The seminar was so successful that it was decided to be repeated next year.
 
On Sunday, October 3 - there was a meeting of arthritis patients on Town Hall Square in Tartu organized by South Estonian Rheumatism Associations dedicated to the world arthritis day and it was meant to raise awareness of public about the problems of arthritis patients and the importance of healthy life style.
 
Forthcoming events:
 
October 18-23 is the osteoporosis week in Estonia.
 
In a number of hospitals and outpatient clinics there are lectures for patients about osteoporosis and screening of osteoporosis with ultrasound densitometries.
 
October 23- Estonian Rheumatism Association organizes an informative meeting about osteoporosis open for public.
 
November 8-9 there is a campaign to inform public about osteoporosis and it takes place in a big shopping center Kristiine in Tallinn.
 
November 12 – Estonian Osteoporosis Society organizes a scientific conference in Tallinn for physicians and the main subjects are male osteoporosis, new treatments and focal osteoporosis.
