On the 10th of November, there took place the 3rd National Conference on Osteoporosis organized by the Bulgarian Osteoporosis Association. The Conference was held in the National Palast of Culture in Sofia, and was attended by more than 100 BJD-interested specialists, scientists and health services providers. Ten reports were given by eminent Bulgarian rheumatologists, endocrinologists and orthopaedic surgeons. The scientific session was followed by an intensive discussion on the problems of prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in Bulgaria, and especially in the conditions of health care system reforms. On December 1, 2000, in Sofia there was held a Consensus Conference on "The Good Clinical Practice for Osteoporosis". It was organized under the patronage of Dr. B. Penkov, Director of the National Health Insurance Corporation and the chairmanship of Prof. M.Protich, Chief Expert on Endocrinology and Metabolism. In this meeting participated deputies, high administration officers from the Ministry of Health and the National Health Insurance Corporation, leading representatives of the Bulgarian Union of Physicians, practitioners and scientists, representatives of civic organizations and patient associations, etc. The main goal of this conference was to reach a nationwide consensus on effective management of patients with osteoporosis by the physicians from the primary and specialized out-patient health care network in this country. Over 20 reports were given by leading specialists from all fields related to this disorder- endocrinologists, rheumatologists, orthopaedists, etc. The intensive discussion led to desired results: determination of the role of medical service providers for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis; identification of the most effective methods for organization and accomplishment of medical services; proposal for improvement of the quality of services and standards for supervision; and a consensus document on a set of clinical recommendations for prophylaxis, diagnistics, and treatment of osteoporosis, based on the modern trends in medical practice. The National Healthcare Insurance Agency of Bulgaria included on its list for 2003 the complete reimbursement of important pathways from the musculoskeletal area as spinal injuries and diseases, arthroscopic surgery, fractures of the hip and femur, and congenital anomalies of the pediatric hip. This is a great breakthrough and an important step forward in reforming the healthcare system providing a significant financial support for the better diagnostics and management of these pathologies of great incidence and clinical importance. Bulgarian NAN has contributed a lot for achieving this success using every opportunity during 2002 to popularize the importance of the bone and joint pathological conditions in the framework of the Bone and Joint Decade 2000–2010: new editorial publications in the Bulgarian periodical journals of orthopaedics, traumatology, rheumatology, neurosurgery, etc.; outlining the BJD-initiative at the national conferences of rheumatology, spinal surgery and traumatology; new interviews broadcasted through the national television and radio, etc.
