Austria endorsed the Bone and Joint Decade 1999-08-12.
The Executive Summary exists in a German version. An editorial has been published in Orthopädie Mitteilungen.
 
A round-table conference took place on March 31 where Professor Kotz explained the Decade initiative. The Austrian Steering Group agreed on the importance of the Declaration of Support by the Austrian Government to the UN in order to achieve the official endorsement. The petition will be presented at a convention of the Ministers of the Government. A group to pursue this was selected. Professor Kotz was appointed to write a letter to the Austrian Bundeskanzler, this was sent out on April 7. The Austrian Network is to meet again within the nearest future.

In Vienna on the occasion of World Osteoporosis Day 2002, the second "Osteoporosis Day" was organized on October 16th by the patient oriented society "Osteoporose Selbsthilfegruppe Wien" in cooperation with the Austrian Chapter of the Bone & Joint Decade, the Austrian Society of Bone and Mineral Research and the Austrian Menopause Society.
 
This event in the Cityhall in the center of Vienna attracted more than 7000 people in eight hours including representatives from goverment and administration of the City of Vienna. The presentations of "Osteoporosis Day" consisted of a scientific meeting and a public part. Prof. Rainer Kotz from the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Vienna and Austria's National Coordinator of the Bone and Joint Decade presented a lecture on the aims of the Decade. Finally, an exhibition informed about possibilities concerning screening, nutrition, and other products and services dealing with osteoporosis.


 
2004-02: In addition to a letter of support of August 12, 1999 from Bundesministerin für Arbeit, Gesundheit und Soziales, Eleonore Hostasch, the Austrian Government has in February 2004 officially proclaimed the Bone and Joint Decade. Dr Thomas Klestil, Bundespräsident in Austria, has signed the proclamation. Federal President Dr Thomas Klestil and his wife are hosting, together with Univ. Prof. Dr Rainer Kotz, NAN coordinator in Austria, a gala dinner on April 19, 2004 at the Imperial Palace in Vienna for the Bone and Joint Decade.

The event was under the patronage of the Federal President of Austria Dr Thomas Klestil. Present as a guest of honor was the wife of the president, Dr Magot Klestil-Löffler. Federal Minister Dr Maria Rauch-Kallat attended also the event.
 
Other politicians present were: Mag. Herbert Haupt, Federal Minister for Social Security; Prof. Rainhart Waneck, Health Secretary of State; Dr Elisabeth Pittermann, Executive City Councillor for Public Health and Social Affairs, City of Vienna; and Dr Sepp Rieder, Vice-Mayor and Vice-Governor Executive City Councillor of Finance, Economic Affairs and Public Utilities.

2004 BJD International Award goes to Austria

 
 

The 2004 International Award to was presented to the Austrian National Action Network in the category of Awareness. As part of a broad-based Bone and Joint Decade campaign, in 2004 the Austrian Network launched a new website and coordinated a high-profile awareness and fund-raising event at the Imperial Palace in Vienna, attended by politicians, celebrities and prominent members of the media.
