On November 24, 2004 Dr Keiji Tanaka, Director General of Health Service Bureau, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Government of Japan, signed the declaration of support. On February 19, 2002, the second General Meeting of 44 medical organizations and 4 sports organizations was held in Tokyo to discuss the strategy promoting further the BJD initiative. It was declared that Japan would be actively engaged in the promotion and education activities of the Bone and Joint Decade, to be translated as "Undouki no Junen" in Japanese. Members of Japan Steering Committee were formally appointed:

Executive office: Secretariat of Japan Orthopaedic Association (JOA) The Bone and Joint Decade has not gained much recognition so far in Japan. More people need to be informed about the Decade initiative. The Decade organizers contacted government officials after the General Meeting, to get support from the government for an official endorsement. The Steering Committee is planning to have a large-scale decade event during the week of BJD Action Week. It is Bone and Joint Forum 2002 to be held in Jingu-Kaikan (Meiji Jingu Worshipers Hall) in Tokyo on October 19–20. The Forum, sponsored by the ministry of health, Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), Asahi News-paper Publishing co., Mizuno Corp. and Japan Walking Association inc., will be open free to citizens, and some government officials will be also invited. More than 10,000 people are expected to attend the event. It has, for the main aims, a declaration of Bone and Joint Decade kick-off, and actions for overcoming the burden of bone and joint disorders. On Saturday, October 19, 2002, there will be citizens' forum session, including a declaration to promote the Bone and Joint Decade and a panel discussion with distinguished guests on the topics of significance and role of the musculoskeletal system, musculoskeletal disorders and the prevention, and quality of life. On Sunday, October 20, 2002, lectures will be given, as well as a free counseling on bone and joint disorders. 40 corners by more than 50 doctors for free counseling will be arranged. The themes of the lectures will be on osteoporosis, joint pain, back pain, sports injuries and rehabilitation for the disabled. On both days, the program contains enjoyable events, such as bone café, traditional amusement, children’s corner, walk rally, new sports, etc., to raise people’s awareness about the role of the musculoskeletal system. An International Conference on the Bone and Joint Decade, was held on 17–19 April, 2002, in Tokyo. A Tokyo Declaration was announced at the closure of the meeting and that is the biggest step forward since the opening of the Bone and Joint Decade in Geneva, January, 2000.

On October 19–20, 2002, a "Bone and Joint Forum 2002" was held in Tokyo. Over 6,000 people attended the forum. It had, for the main aims, a declaration of Bone and Joint Decade kick-off, and actions for overcoming the burden of bone and joint disorders.
