The Iran National Action Network was first formed in the late 1998 by the Iranian Rheumatology Association. A pamphlet in Farsi for the public is being prepared to make them aware of the osteoporosis problem. The pamphlet will be distributed by the Ministry of Health and Education. After a first meeting at the Rheumatology Research Center, Tehran University for Medical Sciences, a contact with the Ministry of Health and Medical Education was taken. This led to a preliminary session with the Under Secretary for Health Affairs. The Ministry accepted to back the joining of the Bone and Joint Decade Program. Another two sessions led to the creation of a national Musculoskeletal committee. This committee is multidisciplinary, and three sub-committees were created; Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis and Back Pain. All three sub-committees have had three working sessions. Postgraduate courses will be given in osteoarthritis for relevant physicians, but also and especially general practitioners all over Iran. Eleven professors of the Tehran University Medical School will give the courses. The plan is to train 34 representatives of 34 University Medical Schools in the summer of 1999, they will then provide postgraduate courses and workshops for their local physicians. A relevant set of slides will be prepared and distributed to each of these teachers along with a booklet they will provide their local physicians with. The endorsement by the Iranian government was achieved on January 23, 1999, when the declaration was signed by Dr Aliakbar Sayari, Under Secretary for Health Affairs.
The 2003 Annual Rheumatology Research Center Conference was dedicated to osteoporosis. This 2-day symposium was organized by Rheumatology Research Center (Tehran University for Medical Sciences) and the Bone and Joint Decade Iran National Action Network, which was held on February 6-7, 2003. Two concurrent scientific sessions were scheduled separately for general practitioners and specialists working on osteoporosis. For the first time in Iran, a three-hour conference was scheduled for the public simultaneously during the congress. Near 400 patients and their families participated, which was repeated on the second day of the seminar. The first patient osteoporosis organization in Iran was founded during this congress by people who participated in the public conference. Around 300 participant patients as well as over 100 doctors registered for this association.
