ActivitiesBrazilian endorsement by the health minister in November, 1999.
The annual coordinators meeting took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 12–13 September, 2002, followed by an International Lecture Symposium on 14 September. Participants from 38 countries, members of the International Steering Committee and 16 patient representatives attended the meeting. The local hosts for the meeting were Dr Marcos E Musafir and Dr José Sérgio Franco. All NAN coordinators signed the Global Declaration that affirms united commitment and action to the BJD mission. The signing took place at an International Awards Dinner where the Award Recipients from 2001 and 2002 got an award. The Brazilian Government declared 2003 the year of the Prevention of Musculoskeletal Injuries.
 A press conference took place on September 12, 2002 (press release). During the press conference representatives from five different regions, Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and North America, signed the Global Declaration that unites nations in the Bone and Joint Decade 2000–2010.
Other activities
- Visit to the Ministry of Health in Brasilia asking for an agreement letter to the United Nations.
- Undergraduated, graduated and High School teaching professors, administrators and sstudents in First and Primary Care, with orientation and practical skills.
- Hospitals with Emergency and Trauma Centers Association meeting to apply routines as ATLS, ACLS, PALS, PHTLS and to produce an orientation folder: what you can do "10 steps to save lives".
- Combined meetings with fireman, pre-hospital care personnel, nurses and the Annual Emergency and Trauma Meeting with more than 3,000 participants.
- Medical Conferences to Victims of Severe Skeletal Trauma with sequelae and their institution.
- Orthopaeidc Meetings discussion.
- Official favorable position of the Board of SBOT (Sociedade Brasileira de Ortopedia e Traumatologia) to the Decade.
- University connections to help research in trauma.
- Nominated a special Committee to arise funds and work new ideas to the Decade in Brasil.
- Marketing the Decade to all Brazilian surgeons in the monthly SBOT journal, newspaper and local reviews.
- The Trauma Week from November 4-11, 1999 where all the doctors that work with Emergency and Trauma, will hold a NATIONAL ONE MINUTE SILENCE in honour of all the victims of violence and trauma, 5-5pm.
- A National Successful Camapign to the elderly: The Safe Home 99, looking for orientation to take off their way those obstacles as carpets and reduce risks with low lights, leave plastic glass with water at bedside; bath protected floor at the shower etc.
- National Preventive fo Car Accidents Campaign and use of seat belts, new laws for bad drivers and a lot of press contribution to prevention and reduction of accidents.

Action Week 2002The Brazilian National Network conducted an “Open Fracture Day” throughout the nation, providing clinical sessions and developing a national consensus for classification priorities, and ned approaches to external fixator, intramedullary nail, minimal invasive osteosynthesis and antiobiotic use. The BJD logo used throughout the country in prevention programs and public education conferences on osteoporosis care, fall prevention, reduction of road traffic injuries. Another successful annual school program for First Aid preparation for students and teachers was also conducted through Brazil.
Activities during 2003All the telephone cards that will be printed to sell in April 2003, will have a message from BJD and SBOT. 2 million telephone cards are estimated for each edition. March 16, 2003, will be the Brazilian Osteoporosis Day all around the country. The Orthopaedic Weekend—A project that will happen during 2003 in 20 cities of the country with the following content:
- Courses on trauma
- Official visitation to Hospitals (Quality Certificate)
- Community free conferences
- Road Traffic Injury Prevention street campaign
- Osteoporosis Campaign with safety home information
- Authorities Meeting with the surgeons for Political Agreement
2003-04-16: Dr Marcos E Musafir has become the new Rio de Janeiro National Health Foundation Coordinator of the Ministry of Health of Brazil. World Health Day 2004 The president of Brazil was joined by the minister of health and minister of transportation and made a public speech, after the gesture of crossing a (safe) road and buckling his seatbelt in an automobile. This symbolic ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace in Brasilia, and was attended by members of the RTI Institution and the Brazilian Media.
